Selecting the right vortex flow meter can seem tricky — especially with so many options on the market. But if you're working with steam, gas, or clean liquids, the vortex meter is often the perfect solution: reliable, low maintenance, and highly accurate.
At F&V Group, we've helped hundreds of international clients find the right flow solutions for power plants, chemical factories, food processing lines, and more. Here's how to choose the right vortex meter — explained simply, professionally, and from your perspective.
Vortex flow meters use a clever principle called the von Kármán vortex street — when fluid flows past a bluff body (an object placed in the flow path), it creates a series of alternating vortices. The frequency of these vortices is directly related to the flow velocity.
The result? A precise, stable, and long-lasting way to measure flow — with no moving parts and minimal maintenance.
Vortex flow meters are best suited for clean, single-phase fluids. This includes:
Steam — both saturated and superheated
Gases — such as air, natural gas, nitrogen, CO₂
Liquids — like water, alcohols, and light chemicals
However, they are not ideal for dirty, slurry-based, or highly viscous fluids. Also, avoid two-phase flows with air bubbles or particles, as they can affect accuracy.
Tip: If you're measuring steam or gas, we highly recommend using a meter with temperature and pressure compensation — which F&V vortex meters offer by default.
Vortex meters must withstand the operating conditions of your process. Be sure to check:
Temperature limits — typically up to 350°C for steam
Pressure range — usually PN16, PN25, or PN40
At F&V Group, our vortex meters are built for demanding environments and come with options for built-in temperature and pressure sensors, allowing you to get true mass flow readings instead of just volume — a must-have for energy billing or process control.
Correct sizing is critical. A meter that's too big may give poor signal; too small may cause pressure drops.
Before choosing, gather:
Pipe diameter
Expected minimum and maximum flow rates
Fluid velocity range (liquid: 0.5–8 m/s, gas: 5–65 m/s)

In modern process automation, data integration is key. F&V vortex meters come with multiple output choices:
4–20mA analog signal — widely used in process control
Pulse output — ideal for batching or counting
Modbus RTU / RS485 / HART — for digital communication with DCS/PLC
We also offer local LCD display options for onsite reading, and customization support for OEM clients.
For best performance, vortex flow meters should be installed with care:
Ensure full pipe conditions (no air gaps)
Provide straight runs — at least 10× diameter upstream, 5× downstream
Avoid vibration or pulsating flow
Mount vertically for steam/gas or horizontally for liquids
Every F&V meter is delivered with a complete installation manual and support from our technical team.
For international trade and engineering projects, compliance and support matter just as much as the product itself. At F&V Group, we provide:
